The empty shelves of the food pantry at Atmore Christian Care Ministry, like the empty stomachs of those coming to get food, are in need.
Pastor Larry Davis, a volunteer at the pantry, said this is the worst he has ever seen it.
Theresa Scott is one of several day directors for the Ministry and said the pantry’s food supply is very close to being depleted.
The Ministry is out of many staple items such as flour, cornmeal, cooking oil and powdered milk and do not expect much relief until right before Thanksgiving.
Davis and Scott both said the poor economy has been a factor in the low supply, but supplies already dwindle this time of year because people start saving for themselves for the holidays.
Scott gave a reminder for those she said can afford to do a little extra.
Scott said a group of home school children recently donated 400 bags of food for the pantry, which was partially raised by asking people at grocery stores to add one extra item to their purchase for the Ministry.
Scott also encouraged all area churches to give monthly.
Scott said the lack of awareness about hunger is a big part of the problem.
Scott referred to this time of year as food harvest time, and said as a farming community, this is the time crops are coming in and while it is a harvest and feast time it is also a time to give.
Davis said he has faith in the community to fill the need.
Scott added the Ministry is for anyone in need, regardless of previous income.
