Many Atmore residents counted their blessings Saturday afternoon after enjoying a hot meal provided by the Concerned Citizens of Atmore.
More than 100 needy and homeless Atmore residents were fed during the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner, which was held from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Zion Star A.M.E. Zion Church on Carver Ave.
Those fed Saturday enjoyed a meal consisting of turkey, ribs, collard greens, corn, green beans, English peas, dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce, cornbread, punch or soft drinks and cake. Gray said a lot of people benefited from the meal, adding that everyone who was fed was very grateful.
The Concerned Citizens of Atmore would like to thank Pastor Humphrey Shuford of Zion Star A.M.E. Zion for the use of the church for the event, members of the Ladies of Distinction for helping prepare and serve meals, Bertha Knotts for helping cook and Gold’s BBQ for donating food. Also donating food were Pastor Bernard and Felicia Bishop, Erma Henderson, Latangie Pearson, Arthur Harris, Wayne Marshall, Lee and Tawanda Gray and Warden Walter Myers. Gray also thanked the Junior Class of Escambia County High School and the youth from Goodwill Easter Seals of Escambia County for serving as greeters and servers during the event.
The Concerned Citizens of Atmore will also be collecting unwrapped toys for Christmas. Gray said toys and other donations could be dropped off at the Unity House on Main Street, 313 N. Main Street.
Toys will be distributed on Dec. 20.
