Lady Blue Devils fall short in Spanish Fort

Escambia County’s Latesha Lee put in a stellar performance in the Lady Blue Devils’ 60-49 loss to the Spanish Fort Lady Toros on Tuesday night in Spanish Fort.
Lee scored 15 points in the loss, and recorded nine rebounds with two assists.
The first half of the game proved to be a tough battle between the area rivals, with ECHS winning through the two quarters.
In the first quarter, the Lady Blue Devils scored only 12 points and allowed Spanish Fort to knock down 17 points, but fought back in the next period.
ECHS gained the advantage in the second quarter by scoring 16 points and holding the hosting Lady Toros to 10 points. As the halftime buzzer rang, the visiting Lady Blue Devils controlled the game 28-27.
Lady Blue Devils head coach Ray Greer said the first half of the game against Spanish Fort was one of the best he has witnessed this season.
After halftime, the Lady Toros swung the momentum and pushed the rest of the game in their favor.
Fans at the game witnessed a comeback and continuous run by the Lady Toros.
In the third quarter, Spanish Fort outscored the Lady Blue Devils 15-8 and took their aggression into the final quarter.
The outcome of the fourth period was the same as the third with Spanish Fort outscoring ECHS 18-13 and picking up an important area win.
Greer said his team lost steam in the second half and could not pick it up late in the game.
Lady Blue Devils senior center Brittany Martin scored 13 points in the loss. Martin also pulled down four rebounds, blocked three shots and had two steals.
ECHS senior forward Courtney English chipped in eight points, while posting six rebounds, one block and one assist.
Sophomore guard Megan Hartley added four points for the Lady Blue Devils. She also pulled down three boards in the loss.
Senior guard Tiarra Ankum knocked down a three-point shot for her only three points in the game. She also dished out two assists and had a steal.
Lady Blue Devils juniors Jodeci Craft and Canausha Crenshaw scored two points each from the guard positions. Crenshaw also recorded seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.
ECHS sophomore Jordan Jaye added two points in the loss. Jaye also pulled down two rebounds and one steal.
Greer said his team needs to work on getting to the next level of competing.
The Lady Blue Devils next game is at home against Spanish Fort. Tip off is at 6 p.m.
