Escambia County’s Lady Blue Devils started off the 2009 softball season with an incredible 25-0 victory over the LeFlore Lady Rattlers on Monday.
The Lady Blue Devils (1-0) picked up the win with great pitching from ECHS senior pitcher Raven Culliver and a lot of walks by the Lady Rattlers pitcher.
Culliver pitched a complete game for the Lady Blue Devils and was a walk away from a perfect game. Culliver struck out seven of the 10 batters she faced, and she gave up one walk in the second inning.
Lady Blue Devils head coach William Casaday said starting the season with a win is a great feeling.
The Lady Blue Devils started their scoring bonanza in the first inning with three of their first four batters making it around the base path to score. Those runners included Raven Culliver, Latesha Lee and Makayla Norman.
In the second inning, all but two Lady Blue Devils made it around the base path with Culliver and Lee notching two of the three ECHS hits in the game. At the end of the second inning the Lady Blue Devils led LeFlore 11-0.
The game ended on a mercy rule after the Lady Blue Devils added eight runs in the third inning and six in the fourth.
Casaday said his team did a good job, but added they need to work on their performance at the plate.
The Lady Blue Devils faceoff against the W.S. Neal Lady Blue Eagles Thursday at 4 p.m. in East Brewton.
The second game between ECHS and LeFlore was cancelled in the second inning due to darkness. The Lady Blue Devils were up 7-0 at the time. It is unknown if the game will be resumed.
