One year can pass by in the blink of an eye if one does not pay attention.
Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of my first day with the Advance.
In that one year, there have been several things that have been learned or shown to me.
The first and most important thing is communication. Communication is the key to success in a job like this although no one is ever able to secure 100 percent communication from everyone.
We all have different schedules, which makes this tough, but hopefully in year two at this paper, there will better communication between myself and any subject of my section.
The second thing is mistakes can be made on all sides, and that the important thing is that overcoming those mistakes will ensure more success.
I have made my fair share of mistakes since taking this job, and I have no problem admitting that.
I also think that as time has gone on I have made fewer and fewer with each week.
Recently, I received a phone call about a misspelled name regarding a Babe Ruth baseball player. The young man’s name is Shelby but in the scorebook it looked like Shelly. That was one of the first misspelled names I have had in a long time. So, sorry Shelby for the mix up.
The third thing I learned is not to use a flash at baseball game because the umpires do not like it.
I see downsides to this because the point of sports is to try and get an action shot. It’s also understandable that the flash might hurt the pitcher or batter, but I have had some players tell me it does not really bother them.
Lastly, I have learned never to give up on any story. It might be hard to get in touch with someone, but it can eventually be accomplished with some persistence.
Hard work can help any story be accomplished just by having the right contacts and numbers to call.
It is vital to speak to important individuals in every story because they help get the entire issue out.
So, that sums up a lot of the things learned in my first year of work.
The year has had ups and downs, but I made it through all of them with help from my family, girlfriend and friends. Thanks to all of you who make an impact on my life each day. Without all of you, my life would be a little more boring and a little less eventful.
Now its on to the second year here in Atmore and I see nothing but more good things to come.
