The Atmore City Council heard no opposition to the vacating of an unimproved street during a special public hearing held Monday afternoon prior to the council’s regularly scheduled meeting.

The council voted unanimously during their last meeting to vacate a portion of the property located east of the intersection of Horner Street and Highland Avenue, but were required to give residents a chance to voice their support or opposition. With no residents opposing the move, the council voted Monday to approve resolution 2013-03, vacating the portion of the property in order for the city to sell the land to private citizens Glenn and Janet Taylor for a sum of $1,850.

In other business the council:

• Approved resolution 2013-04, granting the city the authority to execute a quit claim deed on the land referenced in resolution 2013-03.

• Approved resolution 2013-05, de-annexing the property housing Holman Prison and Fountain Prison in accordance with the future redistricting taking place following the 2010 census.

• Heard from Claudia Campbell, president of the Ft. Mims Restoration Association, who informed the council of upcoming events, including the Ft. Mims bicentennial celebration.

• Approved the awarding of a street resurfacing bid to Hosea O. Weaver for work to be done on Trammell Street, Wilson Avenue, North Carney Street and Ashley Street for the amount of $50,000.

• Approved a “boot drive” event for the United Fund to be held Saturday, March 2 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the corner of Main and Church streets.
