The Chiefs football program received some news that stabilized the condition of the team, as assistant coach Sid Wheatley accepted the open head coach’s position, which was left open by the departure of former head coach Cody Keene.
Wheatley, who has been at the school for five years, accepted the position Wednesday while on his way to an FHSAA meeting for small, rural high schools, according to a release by Northview principal Gayle Weaver.
Wheatley, in an interview after practice Thursday morning, said he was thrilled about the opportunity he has received.
Wheatley’s hiring is exciting for not only the football team but the for everyone involved in Northview athletics.
Northview athletic director Sammy Day said Wheatley getting the job is something that the program needed since he is familiar with the team.
Changing coaches is never easy on a football program, but with Wheatley’s familiarity of the program the Chiefs might not have a drop off.
Wheatley said the most important thing for the players is to start the season off on a high note.
The first thing that Wheatley wants to work on with his players is their confidence level.
Wheatley said there are a lot of things to catch up on with practice starting, but the team hitting its stride is the main goal.
Now that he is head coach, Wheatley is making minor adjustments here and there to his offensive and defensive schemes.
Wheatley said the defense has a change in formation, while the offense will bring a lot of different things to the field this season.
Wheatley’s goal for his first season is for his team to compete at a high level.
He said he wants the team to be competitive in every game with smart playing.
The Chiefs open the season at home on Sept. 4 against Graceville High School.
