The Utilities Board of the City of Atmore announced today that rates for gas, water and sewer have been increased, effective with the October 2009 billing.
In April 2006, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management gave permit limits for sewer to the Utilities Board that the Board could not meet with the existing sewer plant. The old plant was completely overhauled to meet these new limits at a cost of $8,750,000. The largest rate increase is for sewer and it is to pay for a loan on the new plant. Water and gas have smaller increases that are necessary to pay for loans to replace aging water and gas lines.
The estimated increase per month to the average customer is $1.40 for water and $10.00 for sewer. Our average customer water usage is 7,400 gallons per month. Natural gas rates have been increased 5 percent.
