The Escambia Academy Cougars’ baseball team used good pitching and defense to beat the Northview High School Chiefs and Wilcox Academy this week.

In the win Thursday night against Wilcox, Cougar pitcher Tristan McAnally threw a one-hitter and struck out 10.

“He had a big ballgame,” said coach Mickey Cannon.

The Cougar offense, however, was underwhelming, scoring two runs in the first inning and one run in the third, Cannon said.

“We just couldn’t get people on base,” he said.

The Cougar defense only had one error.

The Cougars needed two extra innings Tuesday night to beat the Chiefs 5-4.

Once again good pitching and timely hitting helped the Cougars as Michael Thompson went four and one-third innings and gave up four hits and six strikeouts. The starter also gave up six walks. Thompson was relieved by Reid Bell, who pitched three and two-thirds innings and struck out seven.

“We pitched pretty well,” Cannon said. “The problem is were not hitting the baseball the way we want to.”

For Northview, it was the second one run loss in extra innings this season.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but allowed the Cougars to tie it up in third with two costly errors, said coach Martin Lister.

“We pitched well, but we didn’t play defense well,” Lister said.

Brannon Freeman pitched three and one-third innings for the Chiefs, giving up one earned run. Daulton Tullis pitched three and two-thirds innings and gave up only one earned run.

On offense, the Chiefs stranded 11 runners and struck out 13 times.

“It was a case of not hitting well in situations,” Lister said.

Chasen Freeman went two-for-five and scored a run while Winston Riley went one-for-five with two runs scored and an RBI.

Kevin Vaughan and David Burkett both scored RBIs in the loss.

The Chiefs travel to Flomaton Tuesday.
