Escambia Academy head coach Chad Prewett describes her as one of the best female athletes the school has ever produced.
Last week senior Jenifer Dykes added another honor to her impressive resume by becoming the first Lady Cougar this decade to score 1,000 career points. She joins Jeremy Hall as the only two EA players in the 1,000-point club in the 1990s.
Dykes' offensive highlights have all come in the last three years.
According to Prewett, not only is Dykes the team's leading scorer, but she has also developed into a versatile player who understands the importance of playing as part of a team.
"She's learned to pass effectively and to play strong on defense," he said. "She learned there are other parts of her game she didn't know she had. She's developed into a well-rounded team member. After winning two softball state championships, she knows it's about playing as a team."
Dykes scored her 1,000th point in the final minutes of a game with Faith Academy during the Sparta Tournament of Champions.
Scoring her 1,000th point came as a surprise to Dykes.
Dykes said she feels fortunate to be recognized for her accomplishment, but said it wouldn't have been possible without the help and support of her teammates and family.
Dykes said she feels like she owes her teammates a lot.
Dykes will certainly add to her 1,000 points as the Lady Cougars have 10 regular season games remaining of their schedule.
Prewett said Dykes has the ability to play at the next level, but expects her to go a different route.
