Success is easily measured when you are winning, and the Escambia Academy Cougars have achieved a lot of success this season having won six games, locking up a playoff spot and still having a chance to win their region Friday night.
To pull into a three-way tie in their region the Cougars (6-3, 5-1) have to get a victory in Monroeville over the Monroe Volunteers (7-1, 6-0).
If the Cougars are able to secure a victory over the Volunteers by a margin of more than 15 points then they will win the AISA Class 2A, Region 2 title.
Cougars Head coach Heath Gibson said winning the region title would be great for his team, but will take a strong team effort.
After last week’s 38-7 over the Meadowview Trojans, the Cougars went back to practice this week working to perfect everything they have done until now.
Gibson said making sure his team is efficient is the key to being competitive.
With the offense not adding any new plays to the gameplan, the Cougars are working to eliminate any mistakes that have held them back this season.
Gibson said miscues that lead to giving the ball back to the other team is what he is getting his team to overcome.
Defensively, the Cougars will have to be ready for a strong running attack from the Volunteers.
Gibson said the defense must not miss tackles against this team.
The Cougars and Volunteers kickoff Friday night at 7 p.m. at Monroe Academy.
