The Escambia Academy Cougars swept Morgan Academy in a doubleheader Tuesday.
EA beat Morgan 2-1 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game to improve to 6-3 on the year.
“We played a lot better,” said coach Mickey Cannon. “We made one error in the first game and two in the second, but those errors didn’t hurt us.”
The Cougars were also buoyed by stellar pitching performances by Reid Bell and Michael Thompson.
Bell gave up only one hit in game one, while Thompson gave up two in the second game. They both pitched complete games.
Tristan McAnally went two-for-three from the plate and picked up one RBI in the first game. Bell helped out his own cause, going two-for-four with an RBI.
Nate Smith and Brett Gorum both went one-for-three in the win.
Thompson led all hitters in game two with five RBIs. Bell, Tray McGhee and Austin Ryan had one RBI each.
Brett Helton went three-for-four from the plate, while Bell went two-for-three. Thompson went one-for-two with two sacrifice fly balls and a double. Gorum went two-for-three, while Smith, McGhee and Blake Clark picked up one hit apiece in the win.
“We hit the ball a lot better in the second game,” Cannon said.
The Cougars traveled to Fort Dale Academy Friday, but results weren’t available as of press time. EA takes on Central Christian today at home at 1 p.m.
