To the editor:
It still sends shivers down my spine when I watch them parade behind the flag that they fought for and salute with enthusiasm when their anthem is played. Thanks to these fine local citizens, we continue to enjoy the freedom we take so much for granted.
Honoring our local veterans was just one of many things that made this Fourth of July celebration special. Hooper Matthews' restored cannon added the extra spark that made the salute to the veterans even better. The great job that Ronnie Jackson's crew did in setting up and discharging the fireworks, without incident, culminated a two-hour community celebration that rivals the best that even large cities can do.
Thanks to the many employees of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians for the long hours of volunteer work to decorate the stage, man the Pepsi wagons and clean up aftewards.
Stan Stuart's police force did a great job of directing traffic and the Atmore Chamber Ambassadors were there to willingly help with anything we asked of them.
The array of local talent made for an enjoyable night of good music.
It was a night to be proud of.
This night would not have taken place had it not been for the support of our local industry, businesses, civic clubs, private individuals and the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. Noticeably missing is the support of the City of Atmore government! Maybe this will change in the next administration. To provide a community event of this nature requires $10,000 to $15,000, so we hope other local businesses and organizations will include a contribution in their annual budgets for next year's celebration.
Should this be an annual event? If for no other reasons but to stir patriotism, cause us to reflect on our great country and to focus on fixing its problems, yes, it should. We are Americans, a title that millions only wish they could have.
It's refreshing to celebrate with a community-wide event. We appreciate everyone who gave of their money and time to allow us to celebrate together. We are committed to doing this every year, Lord willing.
