After losing their second game of the season to the Pickens Academy Lady Pirates, the Lady Cougars of Canoe traveled to Monroe Academy, and sent a message to the Lady Volunteers and the rest of their opponents as they destroyed Monroe 74-19.
The Lady Cougars (9-2, 1-1) smothered the Lady Volunteers with their press defense for the majority of the first half as they did not allow Monroe to put a point on the board until halfway through the second quarter.
Lady Cougars junior forward Amber Huskey led the way for EA as she posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 steals. She also pulled down nine rebounds, blocked three shots and dished out two assists.
Lady Cougars Head Coach Heath Gibson said his team played strong defense the entire game.
In the first quarter, the Lady Cougars went on the offensive as they scored 24 points. With the help of their press defense they forced the Lady Volunteers into several turnovers and held them scoreless to open the game.
The Lady Cougars continued to build on their lead as they scored 18 more points in the second quarter. They were unable to keep Monroe off the scoreboard as they Lady Volunteers scored four points with their first point coming at the four-minute mark. At halftime, the Lady Cougars led 42-4.
After halftime, the Lady Cougars again piled on points as they scored 20 more in the third quarter with Monroe only scoring nine.
In the final quarter, the Lady Cougars were finally held under 18 points as they finished the game with their junior varsity players still adding 12 points to their final tally. The Lady Volunteers scored six more to end the game with a 74-19 loss.
Gibson said his team played well, but still has work to do.
The Lady Cougars had 12 players score in the win.
Senior center Jordan Jaye posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jaye also blocked five shots, stole four passes and had one assist.
Lady Cougar guards Kay Leigh Miller and Lacie Flowers each scored eight points. Miller also had eight steals, four assists and three rebounds, while Flowers recorded three steals, two rebounds and an assist.
Lady Cougars guards Kristen Matthews, Rachel Fuller and Grayson Emmons all posted six points and three rebounds in the win. Matthews also had four steals and an assist; Fuller stole three passes and passed out an assist and Emmons had five steals and two assists.
Taylor Helton and Samantha Lee each had four points for the Lady Cougars. Helton had eight rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists, while Leee had two steals, two rebounds and an assist.
Lulu McGhee, Paige Allen and Paige Lancaster all had two points for the Lady Cougars.

Escambia Academy’s junior varsity Lady Cougars started off the Academy’s trip to Monroe with a 40-9 victory over the Lady Volunteers on Monday afternoon.
The Lady Cougars (5-1, 1-0) picked up the win with strong offense and great defense.
Lady Cougars Head Coach Heath Gibson said his team played good defense and shot the ball well.
Lady Cougars guards Grayson Emmons and Lacie Flowers led the way for the Academy in the win.
Emmons scored a double-double with 16 points and 10 steals, while Flowers fell two points short of the double-double with eight points and 10 steals. Emmons also had five rebounds and two steals, with Flowers recording four rebounds and three steals.
In the first quarter, the Lady Cougars jumped out to a comfortable lead ourscoring the Lady Volunteers 10-2.
The Lady Cougars added to their lead before halftime scoring 12 points in the second quarter, while Monroe could only put four more on the scoreboard. At the half, the Lady Cougars led 22-6.
In the second half it was more of the same as the Lady Cougars scored 14 in the third quarter and four in the final period with Monroe only adding a total of three points in the second-half to give the Lady Cougars a 40-9 victory.
Lady Cougars that scored points included forward Peyton Snider with six points, two steals, two assists and a rebound.
Clare Dawe, Brooke McGhee, Paige Allen, Paige Lancaster and LuLu McGhee all had two points in the win.
