A new organization targeting middle school and high school aged males has been started with the focus being to develop leadership skills.
The Atmore Alumni Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has started the Guide Right Program: Kappa Leadership League to help give young men a start on the right track as they move through middle school and high school.
Escambia County Middle School Principal Zickeyous Byrd is an advisor for the program along with Melvin Preyer.
Byrd said the program is based to help give young males from grades seventh-12th, a role model in their lives.
This is what has been missing from our community. Everybody talks about the trouble that boys get into, but there was not anyone doing anything about it, so we are doing something to make sure that we can be role models for these boys.”
An introductory meeting for the Kappa Leadership League was held on Saturday
Dec. 19 with 140 people attending to hear what the program entailed.
Following the introductory meeting, the first of five class sessions was held on Jan. 30 at ECMS.
Byrd said each session would teach the young men involved an important lesson in life.
Another mission of the Kappa Leadership League is to make sure the young men make it through high school and into post-secondary education.
Byrd said the program does everything it can to make sure that a college education is possible.
Education is an important factor to be apart of the Kappa Leadership League.
Strong grade point averages along with good behavior are requirements to be included in the program.
Byrd said that both schools have role models involved with the program as teachers at the school, so they know what is going on.
The young men involved with the Kappa Leadership League will attend a Kappa League in March.
Byrd said they would get to witness two events at the League week.
