Atmore battled its way to an opening day victory Tuesday at Tom Byrne Park as the Blue Devils defeated the Flomaton Hurricanes 1-0.
The Blue Devils (1-0, 0-0) jumped on the scoreboard early in the game with senior Devante Brown knocking junior Marshall Rolin in on an RBI single.
Offensively, the Blue Devils had four hits in the win. Rolin had two hits, Brown had one and senior Michael Mitchell beat out a throw on a bunt for a single.
Blue Devils Head Coach Jason Barnett said his team did what they had to do to earn the win.
With the lack of offense, the Blue Devils defense did play strong with good pitching and only one error.
Barnett said his pitcher was a huge factor in picking up the win.
Outside of pitching, play in the field for the Blue Devils was nearly flawless.
The only error for the home team came on a throw down the line that almost hit the batter.
Barnett said alot of time in practice was spent on defense, and it paid off.
As for upcoming games, the Blue Devils have a stretch of games coming that will be a good test.
Barnett said he has a good corps of players that could be good with the right work at practice and in school.
