Removing ‘Rivercane’ sign was smart

This past Thursday, the Atmore Industrial Development Board voted unanimously to remove the brick sign at the Rivercane development, in order to sell the land where it currently sits.

While the sign is certainly an attractive part of the development, it sits on prime real estate that borders State Route 21. The city has already heard from two groups that are interested in purchasing the land, and it is likely that even more prospects will develop once they learn the land is for sale.

We hope that the city quickly determines an alternative kind of sign to advertise the development, however. Certainly smaller signage can still let passersby know that Rivercane is open for business, while not taking up precious real estate that could lead to more tax revenue and more jobs for our citizens.

Board members also said that some of the prospects may be willing to take on the cost of removing the sign, as a part of the deal to purchase the land. If that is the case, it makes this good idea an even better idea. The sign is nice, but we need the taxes and jobs much more.
