Atmore Post Office letter carriers will once again hold their Stamp Out Hunger! food drive in the city on Saturday, May 8.
The drive, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) with support from Campbell Soup Company, the U.S. Postal Service, Feeding America, Valpak, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, the AFL-CIO and United Way Worldwide, is held each year to provide assistance to the rapidly increasing number of Americans who are struggling with hunger.
Now in its 18th year, the Stamp Out Hunger! effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. In 2010, the group hopes to exceed last year’s record setting total of 73.4 million pounds of food donated, as well as surpass one billion pounds of food collected over the 18-year history of the drive.
Atmore residents are encouraged to leave non-perishable food donations in a bag next to their mailboxes on Saturday morning for letter carriers to pick up and deliver to a local food bank.
