Qualifying is under way for both Democrats and Republicans for this year’s slate of local offices — with county-wide offices such as sheriff, tax assessor and tax collector set to be on the ballot.

Qualifying began Monday for both parties.

Offices up for election include: sheriff, tax assessor, tax collector, county commission districts 1, 3 and 5 and school board districts 1 and 5.

Escambia County Republican party chairman Heath Jackson said no one has qualified for any major offices yet, although Dave Jordan and Jackie Gay have qualified for executive committee seats in the state Republican party.

County Democratic party chairman Everette Price could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Anyone interested in qualifying as a Democrat for a local office can visit Price’s office on Blacksher Street.

So far, the only local candidate who has declared his intention to run is Sheriff Grover Smith, who is seeking re-election.

Smith has said this will be his last term in office if he wins.

Statewide offices are also up for election, including state senators and representatives.

In House district 66, Alan Baker has announced his intention to run for re-election.

In Senate district 22, Republicans Danny Joyner, Stephen Sexton and Harry D’Olive have announced their intention to run. Democrat Marc Keahey currently holds the seat.
