Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department hopes to offset some expenses with its annual fish fry today.

“We have two fundraisers a year to raise money that we need to keep the fire department going,” said board member Wayne Hubbard. “We are hoping for a good turnout to help us raise the money. We have 250 pounds of catfish filets bought. We will serve the plates from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. and hope to sell out.”

The fish fry will be held today to raise funds for insurance and equipment. The plates will be $6 each and will contain catfish filets and bread with a choice of cheese grits, baked beans or slaw.

Board members Wayne Hubbard, (368-5800), Shirley Brown (368-3939), Billy Donald (577-2256), Thelma Albert (368-8885) or Jackie Odom (446-1096) can take orders or diners can drop by the fire department, which is located at 163 James Road, just off U.S. 31 (turn at Mr. Green Jeans).

“The situation is really bad,” said Mrs. Billy Donald, “We get our money from tobacco tax and sales tax. Ever since Wind Creek opened, lots of people buy their tobacco there. We lose the tobacco tax on those products. Last month we received only $92 from the tobacco tax.

“We have to pay the bills and keep the fire vehicles in good repair and its expensive to maintain the equipment at the fire department,” she added. “We are first responders over a big area of about 400 households. We have a good rating and good people working at the department. We have nine well trained firefighters, which include a paramedic. We need everyone to participate in the fish fry.”

Volunteers all over the county are hurting and any donations will be gladly accepted.
