Some of my favorite events to cover are school-related activities. I am always interested to learn about the special activities and opportunities that are made available to our young people.

On Thursday, students from Escambia County High School, Escambia Academy, Atmore Christian School and other area schools, will participate in “Law Day” activities at the county courthouse in Brewton. I have attended “mock trials” for high schools in other cities, but this is the first time I have heard of a real-life trial where high-school students will actually serve as the jury.

I can’t help but feel jealous of the opportunity that these high school seniors are given. Before becoming a journalist, I had never even stepped foot in a courtroom. I still remember the first trial that I covered, and being overwhelmed by the procedures, terminology and other unique aspects of our judicial system. I know that if I had been able to attend a “Law Day” event as a high school student, I wouldn’t have felt so lost.

Several people involved in Law Day’s organization told me that this event would not have been successful without the cooperation of many different groups. I think it’s wonderful how the judges, attorneys, schools, media, and other entities have worked together to help put on Law Day for our young people.

I hope that they get a lot out of it, and learn something about the judicial system that will help them in the rest of their lives.

• I’m also definitely looking forward to Mayfest on Saturday. I moved to Atmore in August, so I haven’t quite been here a year, and this will be my first Mayfest. I have definitely enjoyed attending Williams Station Day, Easter in the Park, and other unique events that make this community special. I have no doubt that Mayfest will be just as enjoyable. Plus,

I’m looking forward to getting another tasty gyro sandwich (and maybe even some fried candy bars)!

• It was great to see such a strong turnout at Friday’s Relay For Life. This event is for such a good cause, and I know it’s one that affects nearly all of us. I have an aunt with breast cancer, and other family members who have been touched by the disease, and I know that I’d give anything for a complete cure to eventually be found.

Hopefully by doing our part here in Atmore, we’ll be able to help aid the research that could one day lead to a cure. Thanks to everyone who raised money, gave money, or just participated in this important event.
