Holman Correctional Facility was placed on lockdown Friday morning, according to officials with the Alabama Department of Corrections.
Kristi Gates, a spokesperson for the DOC, said the lockdown occurred after an inmate assaulted an officer during a shakedown for a contraband cell phone.
Gates said the assault escalated, but was brought under control by Holman staff. As a precaution, Holman remains on lockdown. Gates did not say when the lockdown would be lifted.
She said that the officer has been treated for his injuries and received three stitches in his head. Gates also said there are no known inmate injuries at the present time.
Gates noted that cell phones present a number of security issues, and today’s incident is one example.
“This is why corrections officers are as vigilant as possible in searching for contraband, including cell phones,” she said.
