Lou Vickery wears a lot of hats — author, radio personality, former professional baseball player, Rotary Club president. Now he can add playwright to that list.

Vickery’s original production, “Laugh, Giggle and Grin with Uncle Louie and Friends” will hit the stage at the Greater Escambia Council for the Arts (GECA) theater in early October. The three-act play features humorous looks at contemporary life.

The play will be held Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m., or Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m.

All proceeds will benefit GECA. The theater is located at 100 S. Trammell St., in downtown Atmore.
Vickery said he has written books and songs and has painted pictures, but had never written a screenplay. He noted that it is based on experiences and anecdotes that he has collected over the years.

“I just think we could all laugh more and joke more,” he said. “That’s the whole purpose of the play, to just give us all some time to laugh a bit.”

Vickery said there will likely be a cast of seven or eight actors, which each playing multiple parts. Vickery will play “Uncle Louie,” who will serve as the narrator and help direct the play’s progress.

The play will feature six vignettes, or short impressionistic scenes. Each vignette is influenced by a humorous situation in everyday life. The scenes include: “Planning for a Senior Wedding;” “Henry Buys a Computer;” “Unemployment Versus Out-of-Work;” “A Couple Visits the Financial Shrink;” “Kids Tell It Like It Is;” and “A Parody of the Lord’s Prayer.”

Uncle Louie will showcase each vignette with a commentary “on the lighter side.”

Vickery said he hopes the play will raise lots of money for GECA.

“They’re a great organization and I’m hoping the proceeds will really benefit them,” he said.
