Voter turnout low in Tuesday’s races

Escambia County Probate Judge Doug Agerton said the voter turnout was slightly lower than he expected in Tuesday’s election.

Out of the county’s approximately 23,000 registered voters, there were 9,175 votes cast – approximately 40 percent.

“Some areas were higher than expected, and some were lower,” Agerton said. “I would say it was a ‘mediocre’ turnout, but that’s better than a low turnout.”

Agerton said that the Brewton precincts had as many votes as they did during the watershed presidential election in 2012. He said that the sheriff’s race likely was a big draw for those voters.

He also said that Atmore’s precincts were “lower than I expected.”

Agerton noted that voting started out very busy in the early hours, but tapered off as the day continued.
