The Escambia Academy Cougars used their pounding running attack to crush Glenwood 54-0 in Canoe on Friday night.
EA led 40-0 after the first quarter of play against the Gators, in a first-round AISA Class AAA playoff game.
On the first play of scrimmage, Kris Brown broke away for a 23-yard run, but it was called back due to an illegal substitution penalty. On the very next play, Brown got free again, this time for a 90-yard touchdown run.
Brown and Gordon Brooks each scored two rushing touchdowns, while J.P. Sawyer added a 73-yard touchdown run of his own. Kainoa Gumapac had a 38-yard touchdown pass to Scott Brantley.
EA also scored a touchdown on both defense and special teams. Fred Flavors returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, and Tim Finklea had a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown later that same quarter.
The Cougars led 54-0 at halftime.
“That was probably about as good of a first quarter as you can play,” said EA coach Hugh Fountain, who began playing substitutes late in the first quarter after the Cougars took their early 40-0 lead. “It was great to let all of our kids get a chance to play in a home playoff game.”
EA (9-1) will host Restoration Academy (8-2) in the AISA Class AAA semifinals next Friday night. Restoration Academy defeated Autauga Academy in their playoff game, by the score of 42-24.
EA and Restoration Academy have never previously met in a game. In the other semifinal, Bessemer Academy will host Monroe Academy.
