The Atmore City Council approved for several portions of land in the city limits to be rezoned, during Monday’s regular council meeting.
The 12 parcels will be rezoned from their current B-2 General Business classification to the R-2 Medium Density Residential classification. The parcels include: 104 S. Carney St., 300 W. Church St., 304 W. Church St., 0 Nashville Ave., 307 W. Church St., 200 S. Carney St., 202 S. Carney St., 206 S. Carney St., 210 S. Carney St., 201 S. Carney St., 0 S. Trammell St., and 207 S. Carney St.
Prior to Monday’s meeting, the city held a public hearing to allow any citizens to discuss the rezoning. No citizens spoke at the public hearing, and the council approved the rezoning unanimously during the regular meeting.
In other business, the council:
• Approved the demolition and burning of the property at 205 Forest Ave.
• Approved for the Ladies of Essence to hold their parade on Saturday, Feb. 14.
• Approved for a community Easter egg hunt to be held Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Houston Avery Park.
• Approved for a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) awareness 5K run/walk to be held Saturday, July 25. The route will be similar to the Williams Station Day 5K.
Registration will be at 7 a.m., and the race will begin at 8:30 a.m.
• Heard from Willie Johnson, who voiced his concern about loud music in the neighborhood near A.C. Moore Elementary School. He noted that there is a sign at Medical Park Drive that warns citizens about the city’s noise ordinance, but thought that it would be good to have additional signs in the area as well.
The council took Johnson’s comments under advisement.
