The American Legion Post 90 heard from nine likely future leaders at their Tuesday, June 30, meeting.
The meeting celebrated the 12 high school seniors who recently attended Boys and Girls State. Boys and Girls State allow for young people to learn about government and leadership skills, while spending several days at a major university. The students are given the opportunity to run for office in a mock setting, learning how different levels of government work.
Nine of the students attended the June 30 meeting, and told the Legion members about their experiences and lessons.
Those who spoke at the Legion meeting were Jakius Brown, Gerrall Norris and Chyla Lindsey, from Escambia County High School; Noah Blue, from Escambia Academy; Trevor Reaves, Seth Egee and Kaitlyn Abbott, from Flomaton High School; and Tyler Houston and Jason Perritt, from Northview High School. Also attending Boys and Girls State were Joshua Fields, Bradley Rolin and Mikayla Spruill, from EA.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Legion named its new officers for the 2015-16 year. Wayne Stacy, a past state commander and an Atmore native, installed the new officers.
“Those in the American Legion never stop serving,” he said. “They serve their fellow veterans, and they serve their communities.”
The new officers were Bob Joyner, post commander; Billy Elder, adjutant; Ted Presley, first vice commander; Guy Milstead, second vice commander; Jack Wright, chaplain; and Leo Odom, sergeant at arms.
