Huxford Elementary School Principal Greg Shehan is leaving his school family here and will be taking over the superintendent’s position for Monroe County Schools on Oct. 1.

Shehan has been the principal at Huxford for four years and since he’s been there, it’s been rewarding.

“When we come to work every day here, we ask how each other is doing,” Shehan said. “Everybody cares for every one else.

“We work here for the same purpose — for student success,” he said.

Shehan said it’s going to be hard leaving Escambia County.

“I’ve been here for four years now,” he said. “This is a good opportunity to return home where I started my professional career. I have mixed emotions. We’re excited and sad at the same time.”

Before going into administration, Shehan began his teaching career in 2001 as a seventh and eighth grade science teacher at Monroe Junior High School. He also coached at the high school. He then transferred to J.U. Blacksher, where he served as a science teacher, an assistant and varsity coach for two years.

Shehan was the assistant principal and a head coach at JUBHS for one year before becoming principal of the school for four years. After his stint at JUBHS, he was hired as principal at Huxford.

Shehan is a 1994 graduate of Hillcrest-Evergreen High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Auburn University-Montgomery, and went to graduate school at Alabama State, where he received his master’s degree in education and instructional leadership.

Shehan has a wife, Kathy, who is a fourth grade teacher at A.C. Moore Elementary, and two children.

His last day at Huxford is Sept. 30.

Shehan will begin as superintendent of Monroe County Schools on Oct. 1.
