Cougars to face better Glenwood

Escambia Academy will match up against a much-improved Glenwood team this week as the Cougars play their final home game of the season this Friday.

In a one-side affair after the first quarter, EA topped Pike Liberal Arts 36-7 last week. While the win was good, it didn’t help the Cougars’ seeding going into the playoffs.

Because Ft. Dale — who the Cougars beat 34-7 on Sept. 11 — beat Morgan Academy last week, it garnered a No. 3 seed for EA. EA plays the winner of this week’s contest between Tuscaloosa Academy and Lee Scott in the first round.

EA head football coach Hugh Fountain said playoffs aside, it’s always something to play another team out of the region.

“You don’t see the team that much during the year, and obviously, we’re concerned because they look much improved than last year,” Fountain said. “We played them twice last year and we had our way with them last year, but we were on a hot streak when we played them.

“Right now, we’re going to be No. 3 out of our region, and it’s going to be interesting how we match up with the No. 4 out of their region,” he said.

Last year, the Cougars outscored Glenwood 95-0.

Fountain said Glenwood has good size and skill.

“I think it’s going to be a big challenge for us with it being the last home game of the season,” he said. “We’re guaranteed three games right now. It’s just a matter how we deal with these three games.”

This is going to be a special game for the seniors on the team as they will be recognized before kick off.

Fountain said it’s a game where the seniors are going to be playing for something else other than just a win.

“For us a win this week would give the senior class the title of being the most winning class in school,” he said. “Last year, that class was a part of it.

“It’ll be their last night to play in front of their families,” he said. “It’s an important night for those guys.”

Kick off is at 7 p.m. on Friday.
