The Escambia County County Commission met and questioned the use of hospital funds. They also passed a $3.9 million general fund budget.
This allowed the hiring of three more employees for the sheriff’s office.
The Supreme Court was to hear the case with the Poarch Creek Indians. Terri Paust, attorney for PCI and Tribal Chairman, Eddie Tullis, were in Washington, D.C. awaiting the arguments before the court.
I’m not as knowledgeable about this as I should be. I know it all had to do with whether or not the PCI could set up a casino on their land.
Atmore City Council appointed a five-member Housing Rehabilitation Committee in connection with a $491,200 Community Development Block Grant to clean up and get rid of some dilapidated buildings.
Escambia Academy broke ground for its new high school facility making room for more classrooms.
Rachel Patterson Elementary School celebrated Disney Day with “Storybook Magic.” Principal Buck Powell joined in the fun by dressing as Prince Charming. Kay Williams dressed as Cinderella. A good time was had by all. In addition to Prince Charming and Cinderella, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pinnochio, Donald Duck, Snow White and Goofy were all on hand to entertain the students. Afterwards the children went inside to be read to.
These are the little extras that kids get to do in this day and time in school. When I was in school many years ago, it was reading, writing and arithmetic.
In another story, Dr. Cunningham, Jay Hospital’s administrator, was one of those chosen to talk with President Bill Clinton about proposed cuts in Medicare and Medicaid.
Being a senior who draws Social Security and using Medicare, I am always interested in what is going on in the program. There have been lots of changes over the years, and I don’t think to the good. All I know is that one can’t live very well on Social Security and Medicare.
It is a struggle as one grows older, but I appreciate what little I do get. There are many who are worse off than I am.
Lastly, a local man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after a shooting on Crow Street. It seems that it all stemmed from an argument between the two.
