In 1985, Atmore was showing its first signs of the holidays, which were just around the corner. Thirty years ago was surprisingly much like today.

A Dry Springs man, Roy Foster, competed in and won the Hog Calling Contest for the second time in two years at Gold Rush Days in Dahlonega, Ga.

Now I didn’t grow up on a farm, but I have heard people calling the hogs and it can’t be easy. One has to be brave to enter a context like this and keep a straight face.

Halloween and candy treats were on every kid’s mind and Greenlawn Hospital’s X-ray department offered to check the candy and make sure there were no foreign objects in it.

I know this has become necessary over the years, and it is a shame that it has come to this, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Looking forward to the Christmas holidays, a Christmas promotion was kicked off. The Atmore Advance was asking cooks to submit recipes for the annual cookbook to be printed in time for Christmas.

The Atmore Merchants Association planted three trees in the city’s rose garden. If all went well, one of those trees would become Atmore’s permanent Christmas tree.

I think that is such a good idea. Rather than having to worry to get a new tree every year, use the same one. It looks good and has to be better for the trees.

The post office announced the guidelines for sending holiday mail by giving some tips on wrapping and shipping.

The Atmore Blue Devils were on a winning streak having won five in a row and going into the play-offs. Not only that, but they beat U.M.S. Wright 21-6.

I don’t know a lot about football, but I do know that U.M.S. is always a tough opponent.

A piece of property located along Alabama Highway 21, was purchased by the city to be used for cemetery expansion.

Century High School class of 1955 held a reunion with a pretty good attendance.

Lastly, Santa payed an early visit to town. i guess he wanted to get a close up look at who all were naughty and nice.
