Adolph “Doc” Sutton Jr.

Adolph Sutton Jr., known by all as Doc, passed away peacefully on the evening of Wed., Nov. 18, 2015. He was 78 years old.

Doc was a lifelong resident of Atmore. He graduated from Escambia County High School in 1954.

During his 1953-54 school year, he was co-captain of the Atmore Blue Devils football team.

Following graduation from Escambia County High School, Doc attended Marion Military Institute from 1954-1955. During his year at Marion, he was the captain of the junior varsity college football team. Upon graduation, Doc received an associate’s degree in general studies.

Following graduation from Marion Military Institute, Doc attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He played on the Army Lightweight Football Team from 1957-1957. During those years, he was named All-Conference, Halfback-NCAA Lightweight Division Football. In 1959, he was the co-captain of the Army Lightweight Football Team.

Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., in June of 1960, Doc received a bachelor’s degree in general engineering and was commission 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry.

During 1960, Doc attended and graduated from Infantry Officers Basic Course in September, U.S. Army Ranger School in November and the U.S. Airborne School in December from Ft. Benning, Ga.

Doc was a 1st Lieutenant with the U.S. Army-Infantry, Airborne-Ranger from 1960-1963. He also was a rifle platoon leader in 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division “Tropic Lightning.” He was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Honolulu, Ha., during this time.

During his service to our country, Doc had one operational deployment with the 1-35th Infantry, 25th ID, to Thailand and Vietnam in 1962.

Doc was preceded in death by his father, Adolph (Doc) Sutton Sr.; his mother, Olbia Ouida Patterson Sutton; his youngest daughter, Tara Colleen Sutton; and his grandson, Benedict Paul Junius.

Doc is survived by his children, Aurora (Rorie) B. (Cletus) Junius, Marie V. (Tom) Ewing, Theresa A. (Craig) Sullivan, Michael A. Sutton, David O. (Patti) Sutton and Brendan G. (Nelda Denise) Sutton; siblings, Carolyn A. Sutton, Robert P. Sutton and O. Quida Tartt; and grandchildren, Kaitlin, Damian, Sabrina, Frederick, Savannah, Alaina, Celeste, Raquel, Gavin, Shane, Declan, Kyle, Aidan, Tara Maria Grace and Gherig.

The funeral mass was held on Sun., Nov. 22, 2015, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church with the Rev. Arulappan Jayaraj and the Rev. Gordon Milsted serving as officiates.

Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Edna Voncille Albritton Raines

Edna Voncille Albritton Raines, 87, passed away on Mon., Nov. 16, 2015 at Jay Hospital in Jay, Fla.

Born Oct. 4, 1928 to Marion Hubbard Albritton and Julia Victoria Albritton of Nokomis, Fla., Edna was a wonderful homemaker, loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her husband and family, and was a wonderful cook.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James Edward Raines; and two sons, James Edmond (Sharol) Raines and Christopher Raines.

She is survived by five children, Larry “Ricky” (Rita) Irwin, Terry Wayne (Barbara) Raines, Tammy Raines Duval, Kimberly Raines (Rick) Bartley and Dara Raines (Bryan) Priest; one sister, Jean Albritton McGhee; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The service will held on Thurs., Nov. 19, and burial followed at Barrancas National Cemetery at Pensacola Naval Air Station.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.

John Arthur McGhee

John Arthur McGhee, 76, of Atmore, passed away on Mon., Nov. 23, 2015, in Atmore.

He was a fabricator with Goodyear Tires and Rubber Factory, born in Atmore on June 21, 1939, to the late Doris and Lunia Mae Presley McGhee.

He was a member of the Poarch Creek Indians, whom he cared deeply for, where he served on the Tribal Council for 22 years. He was known as the “Corn Man,” where he roasted corn for many years at the Pow Wow. He was employed at Best Western for over 20 Years, and was an avid Alabama fan.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Cliffton McGhee; and sisters, Francis Robbins and Hattie Mae McGhee.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Tripp McGhee of Atmore; four daughters, Brenda (Michael) Johnson of Douglasville, Ga., Sherry (Kenneth) Howell of Helena, Ga., Kim (Jimmy) Dean and Sheila McGhee, all of Atmore; three sisters, Marie (Otha) Martin, Juliann Stacey and Maxine Johnson, all of Atmore; eight grandchildren, Olviia, Jon, Robert, Miranda, James, Mason, Nicholas, Maggie and Sophia.

Services will be held today, Wed., Nov. 25, 2015, at 2 p.m. from the Poarch Community Church, with Bro. Lamar Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Judson Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be James Dean, Jon Robert Dean, Nathan Martin, Nicholas Howell and Mason Dean.

Family received friends on Nov. 24, 2015, at the Poarch Community Church from 6 p.m. until service time on Wednesday Nov. 25, 2015 at 2 p.m.
