Members of the Lions Club of Atmore and other organizations are working hard to get their floats ready in time for the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Twilight Christmas parade this Sat., Dec. 12.

The Atmore Lions Club, which is building its float inside of Maxwell Construction Company, has been working on the structure on wheels for about three-and-a-half weeks.

“Our float was the turning point for the club,” Club member Shane Hadley said, adding that constructing the float in the past helped the club draw new members.

The Lions Club will be one of some 70 organizations including civic clubs, churches, businesses, high schools and even Santa Claus that will be participating in the parade, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. sharp.

Chamber Executive Director Sheryl Vickery said the parade is always a big deal for the city.

“It was two miles long last year,” Vickery said.

This year’s theme is the “Songs of Christmas,” Vickery said.

The parade route starts at the corner of Ridgeley and Main Street, and goes all the way down to Lindberg. Then, the floats travel down to Escambia County High School, where the parade ends in the parking lot.

Vickery said Miss Alabama, Meg McGuffin, will be participating in the parade festivities. McGuffin will be holding a meet and greet before at 4:15 p.m. in the street block between Ridgeley Street and Trammell.

Other parade highlights include Atmore resident Fritz Currie’s dressing up as the Christmas Wizard. There will be a countdown for the start of the parade, which will start on Currie’s cannon shot.

The night before the Atmore Christmas parade, the Poarch Creek Indians are holding their annual parade at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

The parade route starts at the gymnasium off of Jack Springs Road in Poarch, and travels down Green Road to Martin Road, where it goes by Buford Rolin Drive, through the senior subdivision.
