Mayor, council to run for reelection

Atmore Mayor Jim Staff and the city council announced their intentions to run for another term at a city council meeting on Monday afternoon.
Staff and the council, which includes Chris Harrison, Susan Smith, Cornell Torrence, Webb Nall and Chris Walker, will finish their first four-year term when the upcoming election cycle begins.
“During our first term, we’ve seen an outstanding four years,” Staff said. “The whole council needs to be patted on the back.”
Staff said he doesn’t think anybody can grasp what the council has done for the city.
Qualifying for municipal elections is July 5-19, 2016.
During the city council meeting, council members approved a few resolutions to apply for Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) for the industrial access road in the Rivercane Development north of the interstate.
The council adopted a resolution to apply for a CDBG grant for water and sewer improvements; and approved a resolution designating Staff as the grant administrator for the CDBG grant.
In other business, the council:
• adopted a resolution appointing City Clerk Becca Smith as the election manager;
• approved an ordinance making qualification fees $50; and,
• approved the use of Heritage Park for the department of correction’s state picnic on May 20, 2017.
