William C. Holman Correctional Facility is on lockdown following an altercation between inmates inside a prison dorm earlier this afternoon, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.
“At approximately 3 p.m., correctional officers responded to a fight between a group of inmates who were housed inside the dorm,” ADOC Public Information Manager Bob Horton said. “Initial reports indicate that four inmates involved in the altercation were injured and some may have sustained stab wounds. Medical staff were able to treat the inmates and report their injuries are non-life threating.”
Horton said after responding to the altercation, a group of inmates inside the dorm became aggressive toward the responding correctional officers.
“As a precaution, the officers secured the door to the dorm and requested for backup,” he said.
Horton said prison officials report that some inmates inside of the dorm started a fire.
“Prison officials report that the fire inside the dorm is contained and presents no imminent danger to the rest of the facility,” he said.
The facility is on lockdown and a Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) is responding, Horton said.
The prison remains on lockdown until the situation is brought under control.
