Audrey Evelyn Coker Thurman

Audrey Evelyn Coker Thurman, 92, passed away in her home in Onalaska, Texas, on Dec. 14, 2016.

Born in Huxford on April 10, 1924, she was the daughter of Edgar and Jesse Keller Coker. Evelyn was a co-owner of a bakery and later the manager of P&M Superette in Pasadena, Texas, from which she retired.

After retirement, she moved to Monticello, Ariz., with her husband, Cecil Thurman, until his death in 2010. She then resided in Greer, S.C., with her daughter and later moved to Onalaska with her oldest son. Evelyn was a member of the Prairie Grove Baptist Church in Drew County, Ariz.

Evelyn was predeceased by two sons, Charlie and Julian D. Pierce Jr.; daughter, Toni Pierce; one brother, Elbert Coker; and one sister, Bobby Stallworth.

She is survived by her daughter, Donnis Burns; her son, David Pierce (Andrea); her daughter in laws, Barbara Pierce (Roddy) and Cheryl Pierce; and one step-daughter, Beth Thurman. She was the beloved grandmother of 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Millie Purvis, Peggy (JC) Moya and Faye (Mike) Morris; three brothers, George Coker, Jimmy (Susie) Coker and Billy Coker; and a host of friends and relatives.

Visitation was held Dec. 17 from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore.

Graveside services were held Dec. 17 from the Huxford Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Robert Heard serving as officiate.

Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Eddie Eugene Jackson

Eddie Eugene Jackson, 67, of Atmore, passed away Sun., Dec.11, 2016, in Atmore.

He was a member of the Poarch Creek Indians and a soldier in The Salvation Army, born on July 31, 1949, at Poarch to Walter Lee and Thelma Corrine Partin Jackson.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Corrine Partin Jackson; his wife, Betty Robinstein Jackson; and a brother, James Jackson Neal.

Survivors are son, Miles Christopher Jackson; his father, Walter Lee Jackson; his companion, Esther Price of Atmore; brother, Bobby Jackson; an adopted brother, Ray Vass; two sisters, Thresa (Rick) Hogue and Thelma (Mac) McFadden, all of Pensacola, Fla.; a niece, Jade Neal; and a host of family and friends.

Services were held Dec. 15 from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Reginal Dean serving as officiate. Interment followed in Golden Memorial at Dixonville, Fla., on Dec. 15.

Active pallbearers were Ray Vass, Rick Hogue, Richard McFadden, Bobby Jackson, Thresa Hogue and Trey Price.

Family received friends Dec.14 at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Floyd Junior Thames

Mr. Floyd Junior Thames, 60, a resident of Walnut Hill, Fla., passed away on Dec. 14, 2016, at his residence.

Visitaion will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow, Thurs., Dec. 22, 2016, at Mayberry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. from House of Prayer in Walnut Hill, Fla. on Fri., Dec. 23, 2016, with Pastor Danny Fountain officiating. Interment will be held in St. Paul Cemetery.

Mayberry Funeral Home will be directing.

Grace Jackson Ikner

Grace Jackson Ikner, 76, of Atmore, passed away on Dec. 6, 2016, in Charlotte, N.C.

She was born Aug. 29, 1940, in Oak Grove and graduated from Pine Hill High School. Later, she graduated from the University of West Alabama, in Livingston, with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in elementary education. Grace taught for over 33 years at Bratt Elementary School.

She married Roy G. Ikner in 1961, and had one child, Nathan Lee Ikner. After retiring, she volunteered at Atmore Area Christian Care Ministries and Save-a-Life of Atmore.

She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Atmore, and was a member of the Faithful Workers Sunday School class. Grace taught children’s Sunday School for many years at the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy G. Ikner; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Jackson; brothers Ed Ikner Jr. and Wilbur Allen Jackson; and sister, Minnie Clare Jackson Orr.

She is survived by a son, Nathan Lee Ikner; his wife, Catherine, and their children, William Lee and Elizabeth Stuart Ikner; siblings, Carolyn Jackson Colburn of Pine Hill; Robert Franklin (Helen) Jackson of Lufkin, Texas; James Ralph (Phyllis) Jackson of Pine Hill, Ann Jackson (Dr. James) Green of Shelby, Hazel Jackson Drummond of Flowood, Miss. and Harry Truman Jackson of Pine Hill; numerous cousins, nephews and nieces; and three special friends, Susan Robbins Ward, Ina Cleavanger Stafford and Theresa Barnes Scott.

Funeral Services were held Dec. 10, 2016, from the First Baptist Church of Atmore with the Rev. Arnold Hendrix serving as the officiate. Burial will follow in Serenity Gardens Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Dr. Joel Drummond, Rick Layton, Tim Layton, Stan Orr, Ralph Jackson, Bobby Jackson, Michael Jackson, Walter Jackson, Jimmy Colburn, Anthony Wiggins, Joey Ikner, Brian Ikner and Tommy Ikner.

Honorary pallbearers were her Sunday School Class, Faithful Workers.

Visitation was held Dec. 10, 2016 from the First Baptist Church of Atmore.

Kenneth Ray Quarker

Kenneth Ray Quarker, 62, passed away on Dec. 17, 2016, in Los Angeles, Calif.

He was known throughout the Atmore community as “The Black Cowboy” (A.K.A. Cowboy Ken). A native of Freemanville, he was born on Feb. 16, 1954. He was a 1972 graduate of Escambia County High School in Atmore.

He was the son of the late Rev. S. L. Quarker and the late, Annie Bell Quarker of Freemanville.

Preceding him in death were four of his brothers, Elder Charlie Quarker, Robert Louis Quarker, Shelley Quarker and Roy Quarker; and three of his sisters, Rosie Lee Quarker Sharp, Evangelist Rosa Quarker Maryland and Flora Quarker Crawley.

To cherish his memory and to continue his family legacy, he is survived by seven children, Rashili (Wendy) Quarker of Los Angeles, Calif.; Keiana Quarker (Loumeek) White of Atmore; Karisa Quarker of Atmore; Kristal Quarker (Bryan) Hartsfield of Washington, D.C.; Keini Quarker (Kourtney) Knox of Los Angeles; Gary (Jessica) Quarker of Los Angeles and Khali Quarker of Los Angeles; five siblings, William (Ella Mae) Quarker of Los Angeles; Mary McMillan of Atmore; Emma Lancaster of Brewton; and Marcetta McCreary and Thelma Boykin of Los Angeles.

Funeral services will be held in Los Angeles at South Los Angeles Mortuary Inc. The wake will be held on Fri., Dec. 22, 2016. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The funeral will be held on Dec. 23, 2016 at 1 p.m.

A memorial wake will also be held in Atmore on Dec. 22, at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Freemanville. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Leonard Winfield “Len” Conrad

Mr. Leonard Winfield “Len” Conrad, 82, of Brewton, passed away on Wed., Dec. 14, 2016, in a Pensacola hospital.

He was born in Tuckerton, Pa. and had been a resident of the Brewton area since 1973, following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force. He owned and operated Len’s Jewelers for a number of years, operated Atmore Dragway, Camp Delta RV Park in Stockton and owned Check It Out Liquidation Store. He was a former fire chief with the Wallace Volunteer Fire Department. He attended Hanberry Holiness Church.

His is survived by his wife, Kathryn Conrad of Brewton; two sons, Ronnie (Becky) Conrad and Dwayne Conrad, both of Flomaton; three daughters, Karen Allen of Atmore, Roberta (Keith) Holt of Flomaton and Amy (Kris) Barkhouse of Stockton; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sat., Dec. 17, 2016, from the chapel of Flomaton Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip Pettis and the Rev. Keith Holt, who served as officiates. Interment followed in Flomaton Cemetery.

Visitation was held at Flomaton Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Wade Brown, Rex Allen, Christopher Conrad, Jonathan Thompson, Kris Barkhouse and Edward Stewart.

Honorary pallbearer was Roy Baggett.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hanberry Cemetery.

Flomaton Funeral Home directed the funeral.

Roy James Classen

Roy James Classen, 71, of Walnut Hill, Fla., passed away on Sat., Dec. 17, 2016, at his residence.

He was a farmer, born on May 26, 1945, in Meade, Kan. to the late Willie and Elizabeth Loewen Classen.

Roy’s heart was in farming from a very young age and he thoroughly enjoyed forming relationships with those that he came to know through farming, his involvement in the community and church. His love for his wife and family was evident, and he was so enjoying his grandchildren and watching them grow up. Above all, Roy’s love for the Lord was what guided him in his life, even through his battle with cancer. Now he has finished his race and is with his precious savior. He was faithful and ran it well.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Classen.

Survivors are his wife, Miriam Yoder Classen of Walnut Hill; one son, Kevin (Wendy) Classen of Atmore; three daughters, Denise (Michael) Beachy of Plain City, Ohio, Andrea (Brent) Wagler and Juanita (Terry) Miller, both of Sarasota, Fla.; two brothers, Ken (Mable) Classen of Atmore and Steve (Treva) Classen of Walnut Hill; two sisters, Marianne Classen of Walnut Hill and Beverly Classen of Sarasota; and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be tomorrow, Thurs., Dec. 22, 2016, at 11 a.m. from the Mennonite Christian Fellowship with Bro Anthony Swartzendruber officiating. Interment will follow in Freemanville Community Cemetery.

Active pallbearers are Rodney Classen, Keith Classen, Ryan Classen, Randy Classen, Jameson Ward and Andrew Ward. Honorary pallbearers are Brad Moore, Mike Godwin, Ken McLeod, Lyndon Halteman, John McDaniel and Rob Duffield.

Family will receive friends today, Wed., Dec. 21, 2016, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
