Over the last week or so, I’ve thought about my high school graduation.

The Atmore area high schools held graduation exercises over the past two weeks as seniors turned another chapter and began a new journey.

Most of the graduates are going to college, will enter the work force or the armed services.

Last Saturday, I covered Northview’s graduation exercises and memories of my own graduation crept up in my mind.

It was 15 years ago that I walked across the stage and received my diploma at Fairhope Municipal Stadium.

I remember feeling quite nervous trotting across the walkway in front of my family, friends and loved ones.

Being a big high school, the stadium that hot and humid night was packed with my classmates’ family and friends as well.

For some reason, the way we were supposed to turn our tassels is something that stuck with me. During practice, we were told to turn the tassel from left to right. In fact, I think it’s from right to left. So, being the person I am, I did it the right way and turned it from right to left. I’m sure I got some eye rolls from my classmates.

But, after the ceremony, I didn’t realize it then but I wouldn’t see most of my classmates again. Yeah, we correspond through Facebook, which is nice, and I see some of my close friends during holidays.

I’m grateful to be able to see some of my classmates when I can.

During my time as a reporter covering these graduation ceremonies, the same is said over and over, “this is the last time we’ll all be in the same room together.”

That’s pretty sad, but it’s a part of life as we must move one and get on with our lives.

Another observation these days is when those who are going into the military are recognized.

I’m thankful for them for making a sacrifice to serve this country of ours, and we all should be grateful.
