strength, speed

The first three weeks of summer workouts for the Northview Chiefs have been great, head football coach Derek Marshman said.
NHS’s football team has met Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until noon a short time after school let out for the summer.
Marshman said two days of the week are dedicated to building strength, and the other two focuses on speed.
“When we have a speed focus day, we start outside,” he said.
Marshman said the speed workouts focus strength running and upper body lift. The strength workouts focus on lower body and agility work.
With it being summer time, numbers can be an issue for some programs.
The Chiefs are averaging between 35-40 players per day for workouts.
“They’ve been good,” Marshman said about the workouts. “We’ve been kind of limited just like everything with the weather. We’ve made the best of the conditions we’ve been given.
“Anytime we’re in the weight rooms, we’re getting bigger and stronger,” he said. “Anytime we have the opportunity to work on speed and agility, we take advantage. Overall, it’s been a positive.”
NHS will take the week of July 4 off before starting the final stretch before practice begins in early August. During the latter part of July, the Chiefs will compete in a 7-on-7 tournament.
Marshman said the main goal for the team this summer is to get in as close of shape as they can when practice rolls around.
“The main thing is to get stronger and tougher,” he said. “Those are two things that is something we can do. Our goal is to get physically stronger and mentally tougher.”
Overall, Marshman said the summer has gone well for the Chiefs.
“Every Thursday we end with a team unity event,” he said. “We go out to eat or go to a museum, or community event.
“You can say that a third goal would to bring team closer, and be more of a family atmosphere,” he said. “We have great senior leadership, and we have a really hyped feeling for them.”
