Atmore resident Ditto Gorme finished in first place in the United Bank’s Farm and Landscape Photo contest.

Gorme joined 14 other finalists at a luncheon held at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, where the winners were announced. He won for his night photograph of a super moon.

Gorme said he likes to have something else in the picture, other than a moon, sunset or sunrise. He gets up at 5 a.m. every morning and is usually seen taking sunrises nearby.

In the winning photo, the super moon is shown in the upper left corner of the picture with a tree in the middle.

He said he planned to take the photograph, and learned where the moon was going to rise through an app on his phone.

“It was pretty interesting,” Gorme said.

On his other shots he submitted, Gorme said his sunrise picture, which depicted orange and red colors, was caught in the backwoods of Atmore.

“I’ve always want to take a picture of a tree and the sunrise,” he said. “It’s not every day that you get the colors of the sunrise.”

The other picture on display for Gorme was of a cotton field with the sunset in the background.

Lisa Gregory finished in third place for her iPhone picture of a pair of rocking chairs; Ameria & Ken Ward finished in second place for their picture of a girl and baby calf; and Corey McDonald won the grand prize and president’s choice awards for his photographs of tractors in the field and of a swampy area.

The top 15 finalists were chosen from a pool of more than 900 entries. The contest covered the bank’s service footprint of Baldwin, Santa Rosa, Escambia and Monroe counties. Some of the photos included farms, landscapes, buildings or miscellaneous images that inspired the photographer.

Three judges picked the winners of the contest.

United Bank President and CEO Bob Jones said the contest started as an experiment, and was held from the first of April to the end of June.

“We live in an amazing area,” he said. “These reflect a lot of the patience and passion these photographers have in their art.”

At present, the bank is holding a People’s Choice competition on its Facebook page. The winner will be announced on Aug. 7.
