Looking back: Earnest Ward opened season with Uriah

Fifty years ago, football was about to get underway in our area. The Atmore Blue Devils were set to play the first game of the season against the Evergreen Aggies.

Ernest Ward High School was to open its season against the Uriah Bulldogs.

Atmorean J.E. Sneed was named president of Lake Region Bank of Commerce in Winter Haven, Fla.

The United Fund set a goal of $23,500 for the upcoming 1968 campaign.

New models of vehicles were in the newspaper. The pictures were made to look as if they came out of a magazine.

Speaking of vehicles, there was a raise in the price of car tags. Car tags were $13.75.

There was a story about the possibility of computers taking away some of our privacy. How little did they know? Our computers have taken on so much that it sometimes seems as if they know everything. I watched a news show over the week-end where people were discussing the possibility of human intelligence in computers. We better be careful or one of these days they will take over us.

Piggly Wiggly had fish sticks, 8-ounce packages, three for 88 cents; and 2.5 pounds of ground beef for 98 cents. Chase and Sanborn coffee was 48 cents for a pound and B.C. Moore had jeans, two pair for $5 and all weather coats for $10.77.

West Florida University opened its doors to area students. I had no idea that it has been operating for 50 years.

American Legion held a dinner to honor the police and fire departments and all the work they have done.

The Peace Corps was to hold the test for those who think they might like to join the group.

It’s been a while since I heard anything about the Peace Corps. Are they still in operation?
