Funds have been raised to construct a splash pad in Atmore, officials said Monday.

The splash pad, a joint effort between the city of Atmore, and the Atmore Rotary and Lions Clubs, will be constructed on the old ball grounds next to Heritage Park. Trammell Street will be closed between Craig and School Streets, as a result.

Donations for the pad, which costs more than $150,000, have been provided by the Atmore Rotary Club, the Atmore Lions Club, the Poarch Creek Indians, Gulf Winds, the Alabama RC&D and First National Bank and Trust.

Atmore Rotary Club Member Allen Walston, who helped lead the effort to raise the money for the project, said the ground breaking for the pad will be held in January or February, depending on the weather.

“We hope to open the pad the first of May, or before Memorial Day weekend,” he said. “We’re definitely shooting to open before Memorial Day weekend.”

The splash pad will be 2,000-square feet and will have a seating area for parents. The seating area will be covered, Walston said.

The contractor, J.A. Dawson and Co. of Pelham, is handling construction of the pad.

Walston said the new splash pad is going to bring excitement to Atmore because it’s a new feature downtown.

“I think people got excited about having something new,” he said about when the clubs announced that a splash pad is being built. “It’s going to benefit a lot of people.”
