County and state agencies are investigating a fatality that occurred in a wooded area off of Prestwood Bridge Road in the Huxford Community near the Monroe County line, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Deputy Mike Lambert confirmed this morning that a subject had been found in a wooded area, and that the ECSO, conservation officers with Alabama Game and Fire, fire departments and ambulance are on scene.

“We’re conducting an investigation to a subject that’s been shot in a wooded area,” Lambert said. “Apparently, this person was on a hunting club. We are still in the early stages of the investigation.”

The identity of the person shot will not be released until family members have been notified, Lambert said.

Lambert said the person’s body will be transferred to the Alabama Department of Forensics and Science for an autopsy.

Lambert said they aren’t calling the fatality a homicide, but treat all deaths under suspicious or unknown manners as a homicide until all facts are uncovered.
