Bernard Johnson

Bernard Johnson passed away on June 25, 2018.

He was a 1975 graduate of Baldwin County High School and after graduating, enlisted in the United States Army, where he was honorably discharged. He worked in carpentry and was the owner of Bernard Johnson’s Construction Co.

He also served as a bounty hunter for Baldwin County. He was a faithful member of the Deliverance Ministry of Jesus-Christ-Bay Minette location. In his spare time he enjoyed, fishing, hunting and watching action movies.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. George Washington and Minnie Lee Johnson; one son, Jason French; and one grandson, Ketavious Johnson.

Those left to cherish his memories are a loving and devoted wife, Rhonda Crone Johnson of Bay Minette; 19 children, Tameka Johnson and Jose Johnson both of Birmingham, Bernard L. Bryant of Atmore, Melissa (Jeff James), Mindrell (Michael Pleasant), Nina Johnson, Marcie (Tyrone Henderson) Johnson, all of Bay Minette, Bernard (Angela) Johnson of Foley, Karla (Anthony) Sledge of Bay Minette,  Bralyn Sumarline, Bernard Porter, Leonard Porter, all of Bay Minette, Bernard (Tiffany Burns) Thompson of Daphne, Courntey French of Montgomery, Dewayne Taylor of Birmingham, Robert Shepherd of Illinois, Ohio, Elizabeth Gray of Atmore, Ashley French of Montgomery and Jamarion Dailey of Bay Minette; sisters, Geraldine (Eugene) Marshall and Lois (Nathaniel) Cox, both of Bay Minette and Ruby (Donald) Grant of Atmore; brothers, Ray (Lula) Johnson, Jeffrey (Tracy) Johnson, Ricky (Kimberly) Johnson, Ted Johnson, James Johnson and George Johnson; aunts, Mary Williams, Helen Williams and Dorothy Johnson; uncles, Charles Williams, Booker T. Williams, Leon Williams and Calvin Williams; mother in law and father in law, Marie and William Crone; brothers and sisters in law, Dennis Crone, William Crone Jr., Patricia Smith and Shelley Jackson; 35 grandchildren; a host of great and great-great grandchildren; and special friends, Tommy Jackson, Rodney Mims, Sylvester Day, Danny Grand, Toby Chaney, Rodney Mims and Ivory Harvey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on June 30, 2018, from Deliverance Ministry of Jesus Christ in Bay Minette with Apostle Derrick Bishop, pastor and eulogist and Chief Elder Lester Purdue, presiding.

Pallbearers were sons and nephews and flower bearers were nieces and friends.

Final arrangements were entrusted to Mayberry Funeral home LLC of Atmore.

Charles Eugene Gilley

Mr. Charles Eugene Gilley, 71, passed away on Sun., July 1, 2018, at his home in Bratt, Fla.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Bratt. He was a retired CSX conductor with 36 years of service and a member of the Bratt First Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ezra and Algy Mae Gilley; and one brother, James Gilley.

Survivors include his wife of 48-and-a-half years, Rose Gilley of Bratt; one son, Charles Eric (Kerri) Gilley of Bratt; two daughters, Crystal Gilley (Josh) Calvert of Flomaton and Deana Gilley (Jonathan) Edwards of Branson, Mo.; three sisters, Betty Jean Hall of Bratt, Yvonne Aden of Bratt and Sharron Murell of Byrneville, Fla.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and special son-in-law, Ben Brown of Atmore.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. this Fri., July 6, 2018, from the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Otis Thames and Mr. Terry Bryan officiating.

Burial will follow at the Godwin Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow, Thurs., July 5, 2018, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Ben Brown, Josh Calvert, Wade Stoker, Carlee Edwards, David Amerson and Edward Gilman.

Roger A. Vogel

Roger A. Vogel, 80, of Atmore, passed away on June 30, 2018, in Bay Minette.

He was born on May 4, 1938, to the late Robert John and Vera Myrtle Jones Vogel in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was a retired custodian from the Escambia County Alabama School System and retired from the Army National Guard. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Atmore.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy Vogel; and a daughter, Laura Vogel.

He is survived by his sister, Marlene V. (Reese) Walker of Mobile; one niece, Stephanie (Clyde) Walker-James; and one nephew, Stephen Walker.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. this Fri., July 6, 2018, from the Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Brennan Peacock officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 6 from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Sharon Scarling Worsham

Ms. Sharon Scarling Worsham, 72, passed away on Thurs., June 28, 2018, at her home in Daphne.

She was a native of Dothan, former longtime resident of Loxley and has resided in Daphne for the past 10 years. She was a retired office manager for the Baldwin County Mental Health with 17 years of service. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Daphne.

She is preceded in death by her father, Alfred Joseph Scarling; her mother, Minnie Beverly Scarling; and one brother, Robert Louis Constantine.

She is survived by her seven daughters, Rebecca (Charles) White of Spanish Fork, Utah, Rachel (Zack) Wigstrom of Loxley, Lisa (Marcic) Williams of Daphne, Christina (Kevin) Nolte of Daphne, Michelle Worsham of Spanish Fort, Catherine Worsham of Charleston, S.C. and Tiffany (Josh) Kohl of Port Neches, Texas; one brother, Henry “Butch” (Nancy) Constantine of Arden, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on July 3, 2018, from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Daphne.

Burial followed at the Mobile Memorial Garden Cemetery.

Visitation was held July 3, 2018  at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Daphne.

Pallbearers were Charles White, Nathan White, Gavin Loria, Kevin Nolte, Zack Wilgstrom and Josh Kohl.

Thomas Rex Pickens Jr.

Thomas Rex Pickens Jr., 83, passed away on Sat., June 23, 2018, in Pensacola, Fla.

He was born July 31, 1934, in Selma, to Thomas Rex and Elizabeth (Lyon) Pickens Sr. He was a native of Collirene, and a longtime resident of Atmore.

Upon retirement from Monsanto, he and his wife, Becky, returned to Collirene and lovingly restored his family home, “The Hill,” back to its original beauty.

Thomas Pickens was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Spivey Pickens; sons, Thomas Rex Pickens III and Carrington Allen Pickens Sr.; and his grandson, Carrington Allen Pickens Jr.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Pickens Nelson; granddaughters, Elizabeth Whitman Nelson and Mary Chandler Nelson; two grandsons, CPL Thomas Rex Pickens IV, U.S. National Guard and Cpl. Kenneth Spivey Pickens, U.S. Marine Corp; and his great-grandson, Briar Allen Denson.

A celebration of life service was held June 29, 2018, at Bethany Baptist Church in Collirene. Lewis Funeral Home of Milton, Fla., was entrusted with local arrangements.

 

Thomas Mills Turk

Mr. Thomas Mills Turk, 96, of Uriah passed away on Thurs., June 28, 2018, at his residence.

He was a lifelong resident of Uriah and served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a member of Mineola Baptist Church and a retired boat captain.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William “Nin” Labon Turk and Essie Grimes Turk; his wife, Lucille Turk; and one daughter, Charlotte Turk.

He is survived by one daughter, Debi Bohannon of Uriah; one son, Butch Griffy of Theodore; one sister, Jo Blanton of Excel; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held July 2, 2018 from the Mineola Baptist Church.

Funeral services followed with the Rev. George Fisher, the Rev. Jeff Kirsharr and the Rev. Henry Wilson officiating.

Interment was held in Semirah Springs Cemetery with Johnson Funeral Home directing.
