Thirty-five years ago, in 1983, The Atmore Advance was running an ad for a subscription of 15 months for $12. The regular cost was $15.

A swamp bird, called a bittern came down on one of the streets in Atmore. A local veterinarian treated the bird for a broken wing, but sadly he didn’t make it. The bird was a form of heron, and normally lived in the swamp.

Masland Carpets was planning an open house to celebrate its 15th anniversary in Atmore.

With a lot of working together, a CT scan unit would soon be traveling from Atmore, Foley, Fairhope, Daphne, Brewton and Jay, Fla. Things have changed a bit. If I am not mistaken, most of these towns now have their own CT scan unit.

The Evergreen Aggies beat the Atmore Blue Devils in Atmore at homecoming. The next week was to be T.R. Miller High School Tigers. Atmore was the winner of that game.

The Lifestyle section of The Atmore Advance had a full page celebrating 75 years of 4-H.

When I was in school, almost everyone was involved in the 4-H Club (health, hands, head and hands, at least I think that is right.) I know I really enjoyed it even though I did not live on a farm, although I did live in the country.

Winn-Dixie was advertising mayonnaise for 99 cents; 4-roll package of toilet tissue for 69 cents and bacon for 99 cents a pound. Greer’s had ground beef for 99 cents a pound and cubed steak for $1.99 a pound.

A report to the Escambia County Commission said that the bridges in Escambia County were needing some attention for safety’s sake.

The ban of a popular soil fumigant was reported to maybe cost farmers millions.
