Last Friday, Northview’s softball and baseball teams held their regional semifinal and district championship games in Bratt, Fla.
The Lady Chiefs beat Franklin County 5-1, but the boys fell 3-2 to rival Jay in a close game.
Being that the softball and baseball fields are close together, it made for a good evening covering both sports.
The Lady Chiefs ended their game shortly after the baseball game began on a pleasant night, 24 hours after storms came through.
As I took photographs during each game, I thought about my early days as a sports editor in Andalusia.
I’ll never forget the hot afternoon I spent in May covering either the regional or state softball tournament in Montgomery. The heat during the precipice of the summer was unbearable. We’re experiencing it now, right?
As I stood in the media box on that hot day, I couldn’t help but feel fortunate to be where I am at that moment. I felt the same way last Friday in Bratt.
Last night, both teams played in the regionals, and as of press time, final results weren’t available.
I hope both are going to go far in the postseason this year. For the girls, they need to win one more time to reach the state tournament. The boys need to win twice.
So, who knows? I may be covering the state tournament for the first time in Florida soon.
