The grandson of an Atmore resident will be featured on the big screen in the heart of New York City as a part of the National Down Syndrome Society’s (NDSS) annual Times Square Video presentation on Sept. 14.

Voncile Bryan’s grandson’s, Wesley Dean, photo was selected from over 3,000 entries in the NDSS worldwide call for photos. Approximately 500 photos will appear in the Times Square Video, according to the NDSS.

Dean is 29 years old and lives with his parents, David and Belinda Dean, in Mobile. He has one brother, Hunter, who lives in Hoover. He is also the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Tom McDonald of Valley.

Dean and his parents are active in the Coastal Alabama down syndrome’s society in Mobile. They have participated 10 years in the Buddy Walk, according to Bryan.

Voncile said the family will be traveling to New York for the event.

Dean loves to bowl, fish and hang out with friends, Bryan said.

“He always has a smile, handshake and hug for all,” she said. “He is our social butterfly.”

The special video presentation in times square serves as a reminder for all about the gifts that people with down syndrome bring to their communities, according to the NDSS.

The featured photographs highlight children, teens and adults with down syndrome working, playing and learning alongside friends and family.

The video presentation promotes acceptance and inclusion, according to a release.
