Hillcrest-Evergreen defeated W.S. Neal 47-0 to open up Class 4A, Region 1 play tonight in Evergreen.
The Jaguars scored 15 points each in the first through third quarters, and added 2 in the fourth.
HHS outgained the Eagles 461-104 on offense in the win.
WSN travels to Clarke County next week.
T.R. Miller 12, Excel 7
T.R. Miller’s Orlando Gandy Jr. punched in a rushing touchdown, and kicker Matt Morgan added two field goals to help lift the Tigers to a 12-7 region victory over Excel tonight.
TRM head football coach Brent Hubbert said the Tigers’ defense played well, noting another shutout since the preseason jamboree against Escambia County.
“Our defense played an outstanding game as we have yet to give up a point,” he said.
Hubbert said offensively, the Tigers tallied close to 400 yards, but equaled that many in penalty yards.
“We’ve got to quit shooting ourselves in the foot in the red zone,” he said.
Hubbert said EHS blocked two field goals and an extra point during the win.
TRM hosts St. Michael next Fri., Sept. 13 in Brewton.
Escambia County 46, Monroe County 0
Escambia County’s passing, rushing and defense helped the Blue Devils beat Monroe County 46-0 tonight in Atmore.
Blue Devils head football coach Scott Mason said the boys came out hot against MCHS in their first Class 4A, Region 1 contest of the season. ECHS improves to 2-0 overall, and 1-0 in the region after the win.
“We threw the ball well tonight,” Mason said. “We made one bone-headed throw across the middle late. He (Jacob Hammac) threw the ball well tonight.”
Mason said there were two touchdown drops, and other than that, the receivers caught the ball well.
Mason said the Blue Devils returned one punt for a touchdown in the win, and added that they kicked the ball well.
Hammac was 18-of-24 for 322 yards and two touchdowns and an interception; Craig Brown had 10 carries for49 yards and two touchdowns; and Allen Patterson had four receptions for 144 yards and two touchdowns. The Blue Devils tallied 520 yards of total offense in the win.
“We completed three passes over 50 yards, and we are catching the ball much better,” the coach said. “Jacob is getting more comfortable with his receivers and they are learning how to run routes.”
Mason said the team is a little banged up with injuries, but that’s to be expected.
“We have to get better run blocking and had some let downs on defense,” he said. “Our tackling wasn’t up to our normal high mark. We plan to work on both this week.”
ECHS visits Hillcrest-Evergreen next week in region play. HHS beat W.S. Neal 47-0 on Sept. 6.
