Thirty years ago, in 1989, the Lions Club wasn’t wasting any time with getting started on raising money for the renovation of the old high school to make it into a community center. They were planning to hold an open house to kick off a fundraising project.

First National Bank North Branch held a Fest Fish Fry and every one was invited.

An article in The Brewton Standard from 50  years earlier shows that fish fries were very popular. In the paper was a story about a fish fry for 75 ex-service men in the military held at the State Farm as guests of the Atmore American Legion.

Coming back to 1989, the Atmore Chamber of Commerce was to sponsor a seminar about building foam and ways to use it.

That seems as if it would have been interesting. I have seen lots of buildings on the Home and Garden television channel that were made of foam.

B.C. Moore’s Department Store had cowhide leather bomber jackets for $149.88 and a ladies’ wool coat for $59.88.

It seems as if sales on coats were happening at the same time as the temperature was still high. I guess that is the way “fashion” is. In the summer, they make winter clothes and in the winter, they make summer clothes.

Bargain Time held a grand opening with a five-piece glass dining table set with four padded chairs.

Barnes Super Store had ground beef for $1.09 a pound and boneless round steak for $1.99 a pound.

There was a very nice story about the value of organ transplant.

I have been the recipiant of an organ transdsplant and I have known others over the years. I did not, thank goodness, have a life threatening transplant. Mine was a  transplant of my left cornea. Today I can see better out of that eye than I do out of the other. Believe me, I am thankful every day. I would not be able to see nearly as well as I do now.

Well, the decision was made to have the Amtrak passenger train stop in Atmore. Service was to begin on Oct. 28, 1989.
