Thirty years ago, in 1989, the movie showing at the “Strand” was “Worth Winning.” The star was Mark Harmon.
Area kids were asked what they were doing for Thanksgiving. Answers were varied but most were concerned with where they were going to eat and what they were going to eat. A good many of them expressed their thankfulness for what they had. That was refreshing to know.
One feature on the pages of The Atmore Advance was the Annual 1989 Atmore Advance Cookbook. Readers had been asked to send in their favorite recipes for the holidays.
The temperature was in the 50s but with the wind chill, it seemed more like the 30s for the crowd at the 11th annual Pow Wow at Poarch. The estimated attendance at the gathering was 15,000. The weather was blamed for there not being more people there.
Jerry Jackson of Flomaton and William Grissett of Atmore were named to the Escambia Health Care Authority. Jackson was named chairman and Grissett named vice-chairman.

At age 91, Mrs. Emmett Brooks of Brewton became number one fundraiser for the Hurricane Hugo Relief Aid. They had collected only $427 of $1,745. When she heard about the shortage of funds, she got on the phone and quickly raised $9,571.64.
Escambia County teacher, James Robert Mooney, was charged with sodomizing a student.
An Atmore woman was stabbed with a butcher knife at a local lounge. Her wounds required 30 stitches. The Atmore Police were investigating.
A Century, Fla. man was charged with the kidnaping of his estranged wife. He was being held on a $30,000 bond.
Winn-Dixie had four roll package of Angel Soft tissue for 79 cents.
