Walking around the Atmore Community Hospital grounds Sunday night, I felt a chill.

And it wasn’t because of the weather.

Atmore first responders, including fire and police, and residents parked around the ACH parking lot and flashed their lights and cherped their sirens to honor the healthcare workers.

“This is the neatest thing,” a nurse said amongst a group, taking it all in.

AFD Fire Chaplain Tom Tschida said he put a post on Facebook for the event about an hour and a half before the start.

The event didn’t last long, but it will be long thought about by the healthcare workers here.

And the chill I felt?

The goosebumps came as the final car pulled around to thank the gathered healthcare workers at the hospital.

Jordan Barnett was driving, and her son, Landon, gave the nurses a sheet of paper with a prayer.

The prayer read: Landon’s prayers. Prevention and resources; protection and healing; wisdom and strength; peace and salvation.

As I walked away, I gave a wave and a thank you to the healhcare workers there, and returned home, thankful for those who are putting their necks out there as we battle this COVID-19 pandemic.
